The computer had two joystick ports, one cartridge port, one expansion port for peripherals and memory upgrades, an SIO (Serial Input/Output) port for connecting disk drives and other peripherals, and an RF port for connecting to a television.

The Atari 800XL came with the built-in Atari Operating System (OS), which provided access to the BASIC programming language and allowed users to run software from cartridges or floppy disks.

The Atari 8-bit family had a wide range of software available, including games, productivity applications, educational software, and programming tools.

The Atari 800XL competed with other home computers of its time, such as the Commodore 64, Apple II series, and the Tandy/RadioShack TRS-80 models.
